In the Vosges Mountains

Welcome to the Vosges mountains in the 18th century!
At that time, the summit of Rossberg was home to "marcairies" (the local name for high mountain farms), the local name for mountain farms, as well as charcoal production activities.

But the reconstruction goes beyond this, as it relies on numerous historical maps, archaeological remains (excavation by L. Wissenberg), and a team of specialists with diverse expertise (geography, environment, etc.). This reconstruction focuses particularly on offering as faithful a representation as possible of the environment and its management by humans throughout the 18th century.

The delineation of forests, the presence of groves or isolated trees, the layout of paths and valley buildings, the type of vegetation, and even the breed of cattle are all based on carefully considered evidence.

This reconstruction was carried out as part of Jean-Baptiste Ortlieb's thesis, with the support of MISHA and under the coordination of Jean-Baptiste Ortlieb and Jean-Jacques Schwien. It was completed in collaboration with Pierre-Yves Ancelin, Camilla Cannoni, Bruno Gavazzi, Jean-Yves Henry, Jérôme Raimbault, Dominique Schwartz, Lucie Wissenberg, and Régis Witz.
