Medieval well

The French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap) reached out to me to reconstruct a well discovered in the basement of Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace.

Of the well, only part of the gallows remained, embedded in masonry from the late 13th to early 14th century and adorned with the date 1488.

In collaboration with Dorian Roche, who led the excavation, and under the coordination of Deputy Scientific and Technical Director Éric Boës, we had to reimagine the rest: the lower part of the gallows, the coping, the pulley system, and the surrounding environment. To achieve this, we relied on the remains, including a photogrammetric survey of the gallows carried out by Inrap.

For the missing parts, particularly the pulley, we drew inspiration from historical engravings depicting similar wells.

The combination of photogrammetry and historical iconography allowed us to reconstruct the well’s architecture as faithfully as possible.
