At the gates

Personal project. A Roman city gate and the ground immediately outside it.

The architecture draws on the surviving gates of Autun, Arles and Nîmes. The real subject of the image is not the monument, though, but the semi-natural ground around it: the scrub, the worn tracks and the grazed margins that made a structure like this part of an inhabited landscape rather than an isolated ruin.
