Erechtheion capital

Personal study. Reconstruction of an Ionic capital from the Erechtheion, Athens, carved around 400 BC.
The model was built from several published architectural surveys of the monument. These surveys disagree on a number of dimensions, so the geometry follows the most widely corroborated set and departs from it only where the surviving capitals contradict the drawings, as they do on the floral frieze. The polychromy is interpretive: the pigments used on Greek architecture are well documented, their distribution across the mouldings is not, and the scheme shown here is one plausible arrangement among several.
