Medieval Strasbourg, 15th century

3D reconstruction of a district of Strasbourg as it appeared in the 15th century, commissioned by INRAP (French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research).

The scene covers the eastern side of the Grande Île, around the Fishermen's Gate and Tower, with Saint-Étienne church and the cathedral in the background.

The main challenge on a project like this is not a lack of sources, but their abundance. Old city maps, iconography, archaeological data, written records and even early photographs of buildings that no longer exist all contribute, and they regularly contradict each other. Every reconstruction is therefore a series of documented, deliberate choices.
